Birds of Southern Africa‘s Ian Sinclair Tops the SA Twitcher Standings

Birds of Southern AfricaIan SinclairHaving identified 932 birds out of the targeted 950 by the deadline of 31 August, Ian Sinclair, co-author of The Complete Photographic Guide: Birds of Southern Africa, currently tops the list of South African twitchers. Co-author Peter Ryan is not far behind in 7th place.

Sinclair was also the 2008 winner of the Gill Memorial Medal, South Africa’s most prestigious ornithological award.

Congratulations to Sinclair! Here’s more from SA’s top twitcher society:

Twitching is increasing in popularity in Southern Africa and there is now a dedicated group of people who try to see as many birds as they can within the subregion. It is not uncommon these days to hear of a group that travel from one end of the country to the other to chase after a rare bird and with the advent of cell phones and the SA Rare Bird Alert list server, this is becoming reasonably commonplace.

Southern Africa is described as the land south of the Cunene and Zambezi Rivers which includes South Africa, Lesotho, Swaziland, Namibia, Botswana, Zimbabwe and southern Mozambique as well as the territorial waters to 200 nautical miles offshore.
